Everything about the town of Beacon Heights seems perfect, from their top-tier college to their overachieving residents. But nothing in Beacon Heights is as it appears to be. The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town’s first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi.[4]

In October 2013 it was first rumored that due to the success of the TV adaption of Pretty Little Liars, a TV adaption for The Perfectionists was being considered. It was believed that it would be headed to the CW as a drama series project from Alloy Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV.[5] However, it was believed that this idea had been scrapped due to lack of further information. A TV adaption was not mentioned again until October 2016, when I. Marlene King stated that after launching Famous in Love, The Perfectionists would become her main priority.[6] In January 2017, King officially announced that she would be adapting the book series into a TV show.[7]

It was announced on September 25, 2017, that Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish would be joining the series cast, reprising their roles from the parent series. On January 29, 2018, it was announced that Sofia Carson would portray one of the leading roles of Ava Jalali.
